Two in three people long to be their own boss

16 - 08 - 2013

63% of people want to work for themselves, new research by Pink Plumbers – a plumbing company operated by females – has revealed.

The study, which surveyed 2,000 people, found that more women than men are entrepreneurially inclined, with 66% of women longing to be their own boss, compared with 60% of men.

Women between the ages of 35 and 44 were found to be most likely to want to go it alone, with a huge 72% wanting to work for themselves.

Meanwhile, 59% of men in the same age bracket reported a desire to be their own boss.

Only 20% of men and women said they wanted to stay in their current job.

‘Britain is full of budding entrepreneurs’

Commenting on the study, Jo Lawrence, founder of Pink Plumbers, says that it is clear that Britain has a plentiful supply of entrepreneurial enthusiasm but access to support can be a barrier.

‘This research shows that Britain is full of budding entrepreneurs - with women leading the way. The big issue seems to be getting access to the support to make the desire to be one's own boss a reality.’

She adds that having a great business idea ‘isn’t enough to succeed’.

‘There are so many pitfalls waiting to catch out a new business owner and it only takes one mistake to break a business before it's had time to build up a customer base and financial reserves. A few wise words about how to avoid common mistakes could be the difference between success and failure. We therefore need more people to inspire and support other entrepreneurs to follow a dream of their own.’
