Government Gateway Phishing Emails

14 - 12 - 2023

Beware of emails supposedly from the Government Gateway providing a confirmation code to confirm your email address.

The ICAEW has received reports of emails received from the Government Gateway providing a confirmation code to confirm or change an email address.

HMRC advises that anyone who receives such a request, and who has not requested a change to their online account, should ignore the email. It can also be reported to HMRC at phishing@hmrc.gov.uk.

HMRC has said the following: "These emails, which we are aware have been received by some customers, are a tactic by scammers to direct people to a phishing site and steal personal details. HMRC systems have not been compromised - but criminals have attempted to create fake customer accounts or to access existing accounts using personal data obtained through a variety of routes, including breaching other organisations' security."

If you receive an email and you are unsure whether it is genuine we advise contacting the sender via a different method to verify its authenticity or seeking further advice.
