World Password Day 05.05.2022

05 - 05 - 2022

Today is World Password Day! Celebrated on the First Thursday of May each year - this year falls, today, 05 May 2022.

You might be thinking another celebration day so what!! However this one is important acting as a reminder to all of us that our passwords need revisiting and making stronger all the time. A weak password can be broken easily and quickly giving a hacker access to your personal and confidential information including access to your finances and bank accounts. The longer and more unusual your password the more difficult you are making it for someone to access your data.

The following is a list of the 10 most popular passwords as compiled by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). If you are using one of these then it is suggested you should change them now:

  • 123456
  • 123456789
  • qwerty
  • password
  • 1111111
  • 12345678
  • abc123
  • 1234567
  • password1
  • 12345

As you will probably use your email address to reset any passwords your email address password should be very strong and different from any other password you use.

The NCSC recommends using 3 random words to create a password that is long enough and strong enough and that you can easily remember.

Further information on cyber security and passwords is available on the NCSC website at:

www.ncsc.gov.uk

So if you only do one thing today make sure it is securing your online accounts.
