Covid-19 tax appeal deadlines extended

12 - 05 - 2020

HMRC has extended the period available for taxpayers to appeal a tax decision by an additional three months for anyone affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

HMRC has extended the period available for taxpayers to appeal a tax decision by an additional three months for anyone affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Under normal circumstances you have 30 days from the date of the tax decision to appeal.

HMRC have now stated that if you or your business has been affected by coronavirus you will be given an extra 3 months to appeal any penalty dated from February 2020 onwards.

Taxpayers should send their appeal as soon as possible and explain the delay of the appeal is because of coronavirus.

The aim of the extension is to help those people most acutely affected by coronavirus pandemic, for example those bereaved or hospitalised. HMRC is also trying to help taxpayers impacted by the challenges the lockdown presents. For example, some businesses and accountants have not been able to collect post from offices and will miss deadlines where HMRC have only corresponded by mail.

HMRC also confirmed that it may accept coronavirus as a reasonable excuse for missed payment and tax filing deadlines. Taxpayers must be able to explain how the coronavirus pandemic has affected them or their business and stopped them from meeting the HMRC deadline. Tax returns should still be filed and payments made as soon as possible
