TUC study shows fall in job prospects

21 - 01 - 2014

A fall in job prospects in some parts of the UK has been shown in a TUC study, with the West Midlands having the poorest long-term jobs record.

The report shows that the chances of finding a job in the north east, north west, and south west of England and the West Midlands has fallen since mid 2010.

This is despite the overall improvement in employment prospects in the UK, with December’s figures showing a reduction of 99,000 unemployed people compared with the previous quarter.

The TUC has said that the figures are “skewed” by the higher employment rates in London and the south-east and that employment rates in the West Midlands were "barely any better" than they were twenty years ago.

"We need more well-paid jobs, as well as better wage rises for those already in work, if the UK's 30 million strong workforce is to get a fair share of the benefits of recovery," said TUC general secretary Frances O'Grady.

New unemployment figures are due to be published tomorrow.
